A Fresh Take on
WriteShop®

WriteShop® is already a solid writing program. Our video companions:

  • Break writing into manageable steps.
  • Teach editing, storytelling, and structure.

Our program helps parents confidently grade, providing the necessary support and tools to empower them as educators.

What Makes This Program Work

Videos That Support You, Not Replace You

Parents play a crucial role in this learning process. They become coaches, not lecturers. The videos support you, not replace you. Teens are often more open to feedback from a screen than from a parent, making it easier for you to guide them through their writing journey.

Built with Teens in Mind

Honest feedback from real teens shaped this curriculum: They wanted animals, cartoons, and GIFs, not people. They asked for active visuals, not lectures. They needed writing to feel fun, not like school.

About Our Videos

I’m the original creator of the video lessons that were sold by WriteShop, Inc., under the leadership of Kim Kautzer and Debbie Oldar.

“Each of the printed student workbooks comes as a set of three-hole- punched pages for students to insert into their own binders. Online instructional videos that are available for WriteShop I greatly lighten the teaching load, but you still need both the teacher’s manual and the student workbook.

“WriteShop needs to be taught, whether by a parent or teacher, using the teacher’s manual or via the optional videos. However, the video lessons make it possible for students to work independently to a great extent.

“The program works well for parents working with one or more of their own children but it also works well for a group class. Either way, it requires quite a bit of teaching time. Direct instruction time is required primarily on the first two or three days of a lesson. This is where the videos can really save you time! Then the teacher will need to spend time evaluating the first draft on the final copy during the second week.”

When the authors sold the company to Demme Learning, I received permission to continue offering and updating the videos. I’ve completely refreshed every lesson and added more content.

The original book mentions film cameras; my videos show smartphones and real-world tools teens use. Demme Learning now sells the WriteShop® books but does not offer a video series.

This updated resource is now the PWE Writing I and II Course with Videos, Using WriteShop® Books.

You must use the WriteShop® I and II books alongside the videos. This flexible approach allows parents to tailor the curriculum to their teens’ needs, giving them more participation over their scholar’s education.

To get started, sign up for the course here, then head to Demme Learning to order your WriteShop® books. I’ll provide the link so it’s easy to find.
